Unravel. Tricot in fashion.

Knitting and society
Tricot, jersey or knit, as we say in Dutch. In the last recent years there have been a lot of experiments with knitting techniques, in interiors as well as in fashion.Perhaps not surprising that the MOMU in Antwerp has a exhibition called: Unravel. Knit in fashion. It’s an overview of the diversity of knitting. Using machine or hand, differences in patterns and materials, the possibilities are endless. Changes in society seem to have repercussions on the application, the technique and materials. Designers like Coco Chanel and Sonia Rykiel both played with the use of kitting in the spirit of the times. These are not the only two big names which MoMu has on display. Designers like Martin Margiela, Sandra Backlund, Alexander McQueen and Yohji Yamamoto show how they have used the technique. From the sportyness beginning in the 1920’s and the influence it had on fashion, the 60’s demand for provocative clothing, the exhibition is actually a survey of different moods in the past and the present, seen through the eyes of fashion.
